In the most basic terms it is simply a fast and flexible way of accessing the internet and telephone line. Broadband is a transmission facility with a bandwidth that can send and receive multiple media including voice, video, fax and web data. It is high speed and the transmission is carried on fibre-optic cables that have more capacity than conventional copper telephone lines. How can I benefit from broadband? Basically speed and flexibility. You can download web pages and data very fast, whilst being on the phone or receiving a fax! It is a very cost effective way of communicating with people. Using a broadband you can chat using a microphone, web camera and speakers with free software from msn - and hear and see each other clearly. On a normal telephone line there may be huge delays and you can loose connection frequently. Broadband is on constantly, you don't usually pay for how much data you download, you pay a set monthly fee and can use it as often as you like. How does it work (technical side of broadband) Broadband is a multipurpose transmission service, you can surf the web, download data, use the telephone / fax and send video images all using the same line. There are separators in the telephone exchange and also a micro filter on the receiving end and a modem that split the digital (data) and analogue (voice). DSL (digital subscriber line) uses existing copper cable telephone infrastructure in the UK . It runs off your existing telephone line and you can make calls at the same time as surfing the web. This service is only available within a certain distance from the exchange (speak to your provider to see if broadband is available in your area) ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line) is the same as DSL but the uploading and downloading of information on the web speeds are different. The line must be a BT installed line, but you do not need to be a BT customer anymore for this service. SDSL (symmetric digital subscriber line) is similar again to ADSL, but the uploading and downloading of information from the web speeds are the same.
